Malaysian islands: a guide to choosing the one that's right for you

Perhentian, Redang, Tioman, Kapas: four names that keep coming up whenever Malaysia's east coast comes into the conversation, and four very different ways to spend time on an island. This guide starts from what you're actually looking for, rather than a ranking: diving and marine life, a family trip with plenty to keep everyone busy, or a real break away from any kind of bustle. It's up to you to spot the one that speaks to your next trip.

Diving and snorkelling

Perhentian is made up of two islands a few minutes apart by boat. Perhentian Kecil has a laid-back, long-haul-traveller feel, with some of the most affordable PADI diving courses in Malaysia and lively beachfront evenings. Perhentian Besar, larger and quieter, offers comfortable accommodation popular with families and couples, with direct access to the same snorkelling spots: turtles and blacktip reef sharks are often seen just a few metres from shore.

Redang sits within a protected marine park, which shows in particularly well-preserved coral reefs. The island runs mostly on all-inclusive resort packages — accommodation, meals and boat transfers bundled into one arrangement — for a fully organised stay, with diving and snorkelling that live up to the highest expectations.

A family trip

Tioman offers everything you need to travel with children: a main village with shops and restaurants, and a wide choice of accommodation, from simple chalets to resorts with a pool. The trek connecting the island's villages through the jungle, past a waterfall and monkeys along the way, makes for a full day's activity on days away from the beach. Its long beaches and calm waters make it easy to keep an eye on children in the water, and an introduction to snorkelling or diving fits right in for families where everyone moves at their own pace.

Quiet and disconnecting

Kapas is a twenty-minute boat ride from Marang, near Kuala Terengganu. A handful of chalets and small resorts share the island, in a simple, unhurried atmosphere, ideal for two or three nights devoted to rest, the beach, and a bit of snorkelling. Its closeness to Marang and Kuala Terengganu also makes it an easy stop to fold into a wider stay on the east coast.

Planning around the monsoon

The monsoon affects the Peninsula's east coast generally from November to February, with a broad closure of ferries and resorts across these four islands during that period. Langkawi, on the west coast, stays accessible year-round, ferries and resorts included — worth considering as an alternative for a trip planned during those months. Our guide to getting around Malaysia covers the departure jetties, ferry prices, and booking lead times specific to each island.

Combining more than one island in a trip

Redang's departure jetties (Merang or Shahbandar) and Kapas's (Marang) sit close to one another, making it easy to pair a few days of guided diving with a few nights of disconnecting on the same trip. Perhentian, from Kuala Besut, and Tioman, from Mersing, work well as a dedicated stay, each naturally forming a stage of its own within an itinerary. For a trip built mainly around diving, the Semporna and Sipadan area, covered in our Borneo guide, opens up another option worth considering, with its own travel logistics and a level of diving well worth the detour.

Get a custom islands itinerary

The right choice between these four islands depends on who's travelling with you, your budget, and the rest of your Malaysia itinerary. There are also plenty of smaller private islands, more remote and with exclusive accommodation. In short, every island is different, each with its own character, but you'll find the one that's right for you. Get in touch and we'll help you choose the island — or islands — that genuinely fit your trip, along with the day-by-day plan to go with it.
